SUMMARY:FIRST PEOPLE FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Included with admission\, held in our gardens near the Medicine Wheel.\nThe First Peoples Festival brings together performers\, artists\, speakers and other Native American community leaders. We plan to celebrate the Medicine Wheel at the Arboretum and to acknowledge the contributions to our community by all tribes\, to educate non-native people about this value and to encourage understanding between all groups.\nSpecial Guests:\nPeaches’ Frybread\nAmado Espinoza\, Music maker\nWyandot Nation of Kansas\nWichita War Dancer\nJimmy Beason\, professor and author\nKaw Nation\nJanalea Hoffman\, Flautist\nOzhitoon Designs and more…\nJoin us at 10am for a Flute Playing workshop with Janalea. https://oppr.opkansas.org/KS/overland-park-ks/catalog?filter=c2VhcmNoPTQ2ODg5Ng==\nEtiquette\nPlease conduct yourself as if you were in the home of the most respected friends of your most beloved relatives. Anything you wouldn’t do there\, don’t do here.\nDress modestly. It is not appropriate to wear halter tops\, extremely short skirts or shorts\, or swimsuits. Do not wear T-shirts or other items of clothing with profanity or inappropriate slogans.\nDressing up as a Native American is never appropriate. We ask that you refrain from making or wearing native masks\, headdresses\, or imitations of any Native Regalia. You will be asked to leave if you arrive in such costumes. This applies to adults and children.\nPlease refrain from negative thoughts or comments.\nFeel free to bring lawn chairs\, but do not place them in the performance area.\nNever touch a Native American’s regalia. If you feel the need to touch\, always ask permission\, and be gentle and considerate. Respect the personal space of all. You’ll find that most Native Americans are friendly and will answer your questions about their regalia.\nPay attention and listen. Listen to the directions and requests of others given over the microphone and one on one.\nRespect everyone\, non-native and native\, especially elders. Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Look out for children. Treat others as you would expect to be treated.\nAll Garden rules should be followed\, no pets and no tobacco use.\nUse courtesy and respect when photographing. The MC will let you know when it will be absolutely not acceptable to take photographs. If you would like a dancer to pose for you\, always introduce yourself and ask permission. If you are a professional photographer or artist and feel you may use the image in the future for a commercial project\, tell the dancer. Make sure it is OK with him or her.\nDon’t be afraid to ask questions and engage in conversation with vendors\, dancers\, singers and other participants. Enjoy yourself and have a great time!
